COURSE DESCRIPTION:

             English Language Arts-Grade 7 is a course in which students will have the opportunity to refine and master previously learned skills in the subjects of reading, grammar, and writing and will learn new concepts through effective and modern instruction. Students will be exposed to a variety of reading genres including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama. Communication skills and various styles of writing will also be covered throughout the school year.

 

GRADING Categories:

Major Work (Tests, Projects/Presentations, Essays, Reports, Research Papers) = 60%

There will be a minimum of three grades from this category each six weeks. Scoring rubrics for major projects will be provided to the students when a project is assigned. Writing grades can be taken for compositions, reports, journals, etc.

Minor Work (Daily Work, Homework, Quizzes, Binder Checks) = 40%

There will be a minimum of nine grades from this category each six weeks. Daily work grades can be taken for homework, quizzes, notebooks checks, class participation etc.

 

  • Late Major Assignment: All students will be given 3 additional days (2 days for PreAp) to make up a late major assignment and may be required additional tutoring, assignments, etc. With a progressive grade penalty of 10 points per day, 15 points for PreAp.
  • Pre-Ap students will not be allowed to submit late minor work.
  • Failing Major Assignment: All students will be given up to 3 additional school days to redo a major failing assignment, but the grade will be no higher than a 70. The teacher has the option of assigning an alternative major assignment and may require additional tutoring, assignments, etc. This provision does NOT apply to PreAp students.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

         Excused Absence- Students with an excused absence from school will have the opportunity to make up missed work at the rate of one day for one day missed, with a maximum of five days. Student will receive a zero for any major or minor assignment not made up within the allotted time.

         Unexcused Absence- Students with an unexcused absence may not make up missed work; however, if the unexcused absence is determined to be caused by an extenuating circumstance, makeup work may be allowed.  The grade for the makeup work will be no higher than a 70.

 

JUNIOR HIGH SEMESTER EXAM EXEMPTION RECOMMENDATION

 

            7TH grade students are required to take all exams in the fall, students will be allowed exemptions in the spring.

 

            To be eligible for exemption in a class, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. A 90 or higher average with no more than 2 excused absences.
  2. An 85 or higher average with no more than 1 excused absence.
  3. All absences must be excused to be exempt from that exam. The only absences that do not affect exemption are school sponsored activities and ISS. ALL other absences (medical, pre- arranged, illness, etc.) count against exemption. Student must be present during semester exams regardless of exemption status. Absence on semester exam days will count against exemption.
  4. Two tardies or less per semester (3 tardies equal one unexcused absence for the class- for exemption purposes only).

                        •During discussions, respect others’ comments, opinions, and ideas.

                        •Say “thank you” when given something.

 

            Cooperate with others.

(Be kind. Take turns.)

                   Congratulate your classmates on their successes.

                        •Leave negative comments outside the door.

 

Treat everyone with dignity and respect, including yourself.

(Remember to say “Please,” “Thank you,” “Excuse me.”)

                   Respect all property (your own, the school’s, and others’) by treating it                                 with care.
